CDP Bosnia

Homeowner associations in Bosnia and Herzegovina are working with CHF International to devise creative strategies to increase their revenues to make necessary building repairs and fulfill their missions.

The Maglaj Homeowners Association is one such organization that developed the “Sorting and collection of old paper - a step closer to Europe” project to create a new revenue source. The group recognized that joint activities would foster collaboration among residents and also contribute to heightening awareness of environmental matters, especially important in the EU context. Each participating multi-storied housing unit received its own box for collecting waste paper and the Maglaj Association organized the transport and sale of the paper to a local paper factory. The Maglaj Association retains 20% of the profits to cover its operational costs, and 80% of the profit is used to repair and refurbish common areas for the residents.

By the end of April 2004, an astounding number of 78 buildings joined the campaign, followed by 42 businesses and municipal offices. Together, participants managed to collect 10,261 kilograms of paper and generated $837 in revenue for the Association. CHF International provides support for these homeowners’ cooperatives in the form of business development training and linkages, as well as support for cooperative business procedures.
