Haiti

KATA Gonaives women

KATA refers to a Haitian drumbeat and symbolizes the spirit of the KATA program in working together for a more peaceful Haiti.

 "The community of l'Acul, in Petit Goave, sincerely welcomes CHF International for the KATA program, funded by USAID."
The program, entitled Konbit Ak Tèt Ansanm, (KATA) creates an enabling environment for Haitians to change their lives. Drawing on the individual enterprise and creativity that can be seen everyday in the markets and streets, KATA facilitates the creation of immediate and durable jobs through infrastructure development and maintenance, as well as through workforce development and entrepreneurship programs.

The name Konbit Ak Tèt Ansanm, in Creole literally means working together. Thus, the program focuses on the engagement and collaboration of all of its partners: all levels of the Haitian government, the informal and formal private sector, and the communities which are at the core of the program. Together, these stakeholders identify, prioritize, implement and maintain infrastructure and employment generation projects. The word "kata" also signifies a Haitian drumbeat. Therefore, KATA also symbolizes the positive rhythm of change that the program is bringing to Haiti.

The KATA program is based on a transparent and community driven process that results in a high level of commitment and investment from the participating partners and communities. It is an inclusive process that builds productive bridges amongst the participants.

USAID and CHF, through the KATA program, act as catalysts to:

> Enable access to economic opportunities that provide people with dignity, income and the chance to contribute to the economic development of their country;
> Enhance the government's ability to effectively respond to the needs of its constituents;
> Provide improved access to capital, market linkages and investments for Haiti's micro, small and medium enterprises; and
> Increase access to social and productive infrastructure.

Sustainability:

> The KATA program provides capacity building support to ensure that infrastructure projects will be maintained long term through the coordinated efforts of the private sector, local government and the community.
>
In addition to generating short term employment through infrastructure development projects, the KATA program facilitates the creation of long term job opportunities through private sector development and workforce training programs. As a result, durable jobs will be sustained long after the KATA program.
